Brian Cox Speaks Out on Kevin Spacey and Hollywood Cancel Culture

Brian Cox recently shared his candid views on several controversial topics in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, particularly focusing on Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Strong, and the Oscars.

Cox expressed support for Kevin Spacey’s return to Hollywood, stating that while Spacey’s past behavior was “a little unseemly,” he believes he should not be “punished endlessly” for it. He emphasized the need for forgiveness, saying, “There should be a case of forgive and forget. Let’s move on”.Cox acknowledged that Spacey has faced significant backlash and has been through a lot, suggesting that it’s time for him to re-enter the industry. He reiterated that everyone has flaws, referencing the biblical notion of casting the first stone, implying that no one is without sin.

Addressing his relationship with Succession co-star Jeremy Strong, Cox reflected on their working dynamic after previously critiquing Strong’s intense acting methods in a 2021 profile. He noted that while their approaches differ—Cox prefers a more traditional style compared to Strong’s immersive technique—they maintained professionalism during filming. “We just got on with our job,” he stated, acknowledging Strong’s talent as an actor despite their contrasting methods.

Cox also shared his thoughts on the Oscars, labeling them as “absolute nonsense.” He criticized the awards as being superficial, arguing that they do not accurately reflect the hard work and dedication actors put into their craft over a year. This sentiment underscores his belief that awards should not overshadow the artistic process itself.
Cox believes that Spacey should not be “punished endlessly” for his past actions, which include multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. He stated, “Maybe he got too out of hand, but I don’t think he should be punished endlessly for it,” advocating for a “forgive and forget” approach.

Cox mentioned that he recently met with Spacey and reflected on their past collaboration in the film Iron Will. He described Spacey as a “very fine actor” and expressed his fondness for him, indicating that he believes Spacey deserves another chance in Hollywood

Cox’s remarks highlight his willingness to engage in difficult conversations about accountability in Hollywood while advocating for a more forgiving approach to past controversies.
