Russia arrests suspect for Moscow bombing

Russian authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s chemical, biological, and radiological defense forces. The arrest occurred on December 18, 2024, following an explosion that killed Kirillov and his aide, Ilya Polikarpov, in Moscow on December 17.

The assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov appears to have been motivated primarily by his role in overseeing Russia’s chemical weapons program and his alleged involvement in war crimes during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Kirillov was the head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense Forces and had recently been charged in absentia by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) for authorizing the use of prohibited chemical weapons against Ukrainian forces. The SBU described him as a “war criminal” and considered him a legitimate target due to his direct involvement in military strategies that included the deployment of chemical munitions, with over 4,800 instances reported since the full-scale invasion began.

In addition to the immediate military and strategic motivations, there are suggestions that internal conflicts within Russia’s military leadership could also have played a role. Analysts have speculated that Kirillov’s assassination might be linked to power struggles or purges within the Russian Ministry of Defense, particularly following significant changes in leadership earlier in the year. This context raises the possibility that rival factions within the military could have had their own reasons for wanting Kirillov eliminated.

Furthermore, the operation itself was characterized as a sophisticated intelligence operation by Ukrainian forces, indicating a well-planned act of sabotage rather than a random act of terrorism. The attack was executed using a remote-controlled explosive device hidden in an electric scooter, showcasing both operational capability and intent to send a strong message regarding accountability for war crimes committed during the conflict.

The suspect is a 29-year-old national from Uzbekistan who allegedly confessed to being recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services to carry out the attack. According to the Russian Investigative Committee, he was promised $100,000 and the opportunity to relocate to a European country in exchange for executing the bombing. He reportedly traveled to Moscow with a homemade explosive device, which he attached to an electric scooter parked outside Kirillov’s apartment building. The device was detonated remotely as Kirillov and his aide exited the building.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as Kirillov was a prominent military figure accused of overseeing the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. Just a day before his assassination, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) had initiated a criminal investigation against him for these alleged actions.

The attack has drawn international attention due to its implications for the war and the increasing boldness of operations conducted by Ukrainian forces within Russia. Following the incident, Russian officials have vowed to respond decisively against those responsible.
