World Chess Champion D. Gukesh Receives Heroic Welcome at Chennai

D. Gukesh, the newly crowned world chess champion, received an overwhelming hero’s welcome upon his return to Chennai on December 16, 2024. This event marked a significant moment for both Gukesh and the chess community in India, as he became the youngest world champion in history after defeating China’s Ding Liren in a closely contested match that concluded with a score of 7.5 to 6.5.

As Gukesh arrived at Chennai International Airport, thousands of fans, students, and officials gathered to celebrate his victory. The atmosphere was electric, with chants of “Gukesh, Gukesh” resonating throughout the terminal. Many attendees had arrived well in advance, eager to catch a glimpse of their champion.

When D. Gukesh arrived at Chennai International Airport on December 16, 2024, he was met with an extraordinary reception that resembled the welcome of a rock star. The atmosphere was electric, filled with excitement and admiration from the crowd, which included fans, students, and officials.

As Gukesh made his way through the terminal, chants of “Gukesh, Gukesh, Gukesh” erupted from the enthusiastic supporters. Many had gathered well in advance, some even cycling long distances just to be part of the celebration. The crowd was adorned with banners and placards congratulating him, while some fans held large photo frames featuring all world champions, with Gukesh at the center.

The scene was lively, complete with confetti and performers on stilts. Gukesh was garlanded and presented with bouquets as he expressed his gratitude to the fans. He remarked on the significance of their support, stating, “You guys are amazing! You gave me so much energy,” and emphasized how much it meant to bring the trophy back to India.
Among the crowd were students from Velammal Group, where Gukesh is currently studying, holding placards that read “Congratulations Gukesh.” The reception was so intense that security personnel struggled to manage the throngs of admirers who surged forward to congratulate him.

Gukesh’s journey to this historic title began earlier in the year when he won the Candidates Tournament and subsequently led India to its first-ever gold medal at the Chess Olympiad. His victory over Ding Liren not only ended an 11-year wait for India to reclaim the world championship title—last held by Viswanathan Anand—but also solidified Gukesh’s status as a rising star in international chess.

During his brief address to the media at the airport, Gukesh expressed gratitude towards his supporters and acknowledged the hard work of his coaches and family who contributed to his success. He also confirmed that he would not participate in the upcoming World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New York later that month.

He was visibly moved by the overwhelming support, stating that it was “amazing” to see so many fans gathered to celebrate his victory. Gukesh noted that their enthusiasm and energy provided him with motivation, especially after the intense pressure of the championship match.He acknowledged the significance of their support, saying, “You guys are amazing! You gave me so much energy,” highlighting how much it meant to him to bring the trophy back to

India. Gukesh also took a moment to reflect on his journey, emphasizing that while becoming world champion is a significant achievement, he recognizes that there is still much work ahead in his pursuit to become the best player in the world

This monumental win has sparked excitement and pride within India’s chess community, with many viewing Gukesh’s achievement as a continuation of what is being termed a “Golden Era” for Indian chess.
