At least 66 people have died after a truck carrying wedding guests plunged into a river in southern Ethiopia. The tragic incident occurred on December 29, 2024, when an overloaded and aging truck fell off the Gelan Bridge, a location known for previous traffic accidents. According to Lemma Lagide, the medical director at Bona General Hospital, 64 victims died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries later at the hospital.
The truck was reportedly contracted to transport wedding attendees, and many of the passengers were men, reflecting cultural norms that require them to escort the bride. Eyewitnesses described a festive atmosphere just before the accident, with music playing and people dancing inside the truck.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the remote location of the accident, leading to significant delays in assistance. Villagers attempted to rescue survivors using only sticks as makeshift tools against the strong currents of the river. Local authorities indicated that the death toll could rise, with reports suggesting it may reach 71 as more victims are accounted for.
