The Kerala Police have registered multiple cases under stringent laws, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. So far, 14 individuals, including her coaches and peers, have been arrested, with more apprehensions expected as investigations proceed.

A Timeline of the Allegations

The young athlete, hailing from Pathanamthitta district, disclosed her ordeal during a field visit by volunteers from the Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society. During a counseling session facilitated by the CWC, she recounted a series of incidents of sexual abuse spanning years.

The abuse reportedly began when she was 13, initiated by a 21-year-old man who manipulated her through obscene messages and photographs. He later coerced her into meeting him at a deserted rubber plantation, where he allegedly raped her and recorded the act. Subsequently, she endured gang rape at the hands of this individual and others.

The survivor also alleged that several perpetrators contacted her using her father’s mobile phone, further exploiting her through threats and blackmail. Among those arrested are individuals already facing criminal charges, including POCSO violations and culpable homicide.

Investigation and Legal Actions

Superintendent of Police V.G. Vinod Kumar has stated that the investigation has been intensified. “We are recording the girl’s detailed statement in the presence of her mother. Further arrests and additional cases will follow based on her testimony,” he said.

Evidence, including mobile phone messages and videos, has been seized for forensic analysis. Authorities have involved psychologists under the Nirbhaya scheme to ensure the survivor receives the necessary support.

The victim’s family was reportedly unaware of the extent of the abuse. Her father expressed disbelief upon learning of the incidents. A close family source revealed, “She hadn’t confided in her mother about these events. Being an athlete, she attended various sports camps, which is when the abuses occurred.”

Following her disclosure, the victim has been placed in a government shelter home for her protection. Advocate N. Rajeev, chairperson of the Pathanamthitta Child Welfare Committee, confirmed that counseling sessions are ongoing to help the survivor cope with her trauma.

A Call for Systemic Reforms

This case has brought renewed attention to the vulnerabilities faced by young athletes, particularly those from marginalized communities. Activists and legal experts are urging stricter regulations, oversight in sports environments, and robust support systems for survivors of abuse.

As investigations continue, the Kerala Police have assured that they will leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice for the survivor and taking preventive measures to safeguard others from similar atrocities.
