Conflicting Reports on Casualties
The exact death toll remains uncertain. Officials confirmed at least 15 deaths and around 70 injuries. However, some reports suggest the fatalities could be as high as 50. Meanwhile, distressed families are searching for missing loved ones at temporary medical facilities.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and immediately contacted state officials to coordinate relief efforts. Authorities are actively working to restore order and provide medical assistance to the injured.
Challenges in Crowd Control
The stampede occurred on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days of the festival. Nearly 100 million devotees had gathered.
