In 2022, road accidents in India led to approximately 462 deaths daily, according to a report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This translates to about 19 lives lost every hour.

The report highlights that 1.68 lakh people died in road accidents in 2022. Additionally, the country experienced around 1,264 road accidents each day.

Increase in accidents and fatalities
Compared to 2021, road accidents increased by 12%, resulting in a 9% rise in fatalities There were 4.61 lakh road accidents in 2022, up from 4.12 lakh in the previous year.
Age group affected
A significant number of fatalities were in the 25-35 age group, with at least 42,671 deaths.
Speeding accounted for 70% of road crash deaths
States with high accident rates
Tamil Nadu had the highest number of road accidents (64,105), while Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of fatalities.
Road types
In 2022, 32.9% of accidents occurred on National Highways, 23.1% on State Highways, and 43.9% on other roads.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has stressed the importance of addressing issues such as speeding, reckless and intoxicated driving, and non-compliance with traffic laws to reduce accidents.

Overspeeding
Driving at excessive speeds reduces a driver’s reaction time, making it harder to respond to sudden changes and increasing the severity of collisions.
Drunken Driving
Driving under the influence of alcohol impairs cognitive functions and slows reaction times, posing a major risk.
Distracted Driving
Engaging in activities like using mobile phones or interacting with passengers diverts attention from the road, leading to accidents.
Non-Compliance with Traffic Rules
Disregarding traffic rules, such as running red lights or making improper lane changes, contributes to chaotic traffic conditions and increases accident risks.
Inadequate road maintenance, potholes, and insufficient signage can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.
Narrow roads, a lack of pedestrian crossings, and poor lighting can all contribute to accidents.
