Kerala boy killed his own family

A 23-year-old, Afan, allegedly killed five people, including four close family members, in Kerala on Monday.

Neighbors described Afan as a good-natured, mild-mannered, and soft-spoken person. None of his relatives or neighbors could believe that he was capable of committing such horrific murders.

A woman running a tea shop near Aghna’s house said, “I cannot believe he did it. He was a good boy. There is not a single bad thing we can say about him. I even saw his younger brother yesterday afternoon. I had no idea what had happened until the police arrived.”

Mass killing by Afan

Reports suggest that financial struggles within the family might have been the motive behind the killings, with Afan allegedly using a hammer to carry out the murders.

The victims included Afan’s grandmother, who was in her 80s, a young woman believed to be his lover, his paternal uncle, and the uncle’s wife, his father Raheem’s brother , Latheef, along with Latheef’s wife.

The horrific incident continued at his home, where he killed his 13-year-old brother Afsan along with his mother, who was left critically injured.

The brutal killings occurred across three separate homes, located about 20 to 25 kilometers apart, in the Venjaramoodu area near the state capital.

According to the police, they believe Afan traveled from one house to another on his bike to carry out the murders. The incident came to light when Afan showed up at the Venjaramoodu Police station on Monday evening and confessed to the killings.

The authorities have not formally arrested Afan yet, as he is receiving treatment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College after reportedly ingesting poison. The police have not yet shared official details about the case, including the motive behind the killings or the weapons involved.

Possible motive behind the murder

Binu S. Nair, a member of the Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat, characterized the murder scene as especially graphic, with the victims suffering significant head injuries.
Shaji, a local, claimed that Farsana had been staying at Afan’s house for the past two days, potentially creating friction between the family, though the precise provocation is still unknown.
Abdul Raheem, the father of the accused, who works in Saudi Arabia, spoke to a TV channel about the situation. He acknowledged the family’s financial difficulties but denied that they were a major issue for his son. Raheem said , “He had been to Saudi Arabia for six months on a visiting visa and returned happily…He was not against clearing the debt by selling the property. My relatives had indicated his affair with the woman, but we were not against the relationship. He had taken money from her.”
According to the local community, Afan had no known history of substance misuse or criminal behavior. The circumstances leading up to this incident are currently being pieced together by authorities. To ascertain the precise motivation behind the murders, forensic specialists and law enforcement units are also examining the evidence.
