Xi Jinping, the leader of China’s Communist Party, visited a village of the Dong ethnic group in Guizhou province on Monday afternoon.
During his visit, he praised the community’s unique culture, calling it “deeply traditional and remarkably stylish.” His visit was part of an effort to understand local life and development in the region.
Xi Jinping discovered the local initiatives to strengthen grassroots Party organizations, uphold social order, preserve and advance the traditional culture of the Dong people, and support rural development when touring Zhaoxing Dong Village in Liping County.
Dong ethnic group
China officially recognizes 56 ethnic minorities, including the Dong ethnic group. The southern provinces of Guangxi, Hunan, and Guizhou are where they primarily reside. The Dong people have created exquisite folk music, built distinctive wooden architecture, and preserved a rich cultural heritage.
The Dong people have built magnificent timber structures, crafted nail-free homes, and constructed the famous Wind and Rain Bridges and Drum Towers as community meeting places.
Their culture is heavily reliant on music, particularly polyphonic singing, of which the well-known Grand Song (Gaolo) is a UNESCO cultural treasure.
Additionally, the Dong people enjoy lively celebrations that are full of dancing, feasting, and music, including the Dong New Year. Xi experienced a performance of the Dong ethnic group’s grand song, a folk chorus that is listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, in the Liping county village of Zhaoxing Dong.
They dye their traditional attire using age-old methods and exquisitely embroider it with elaborate designs. The Dong have embraced modernity while maintaining a strong bond with their own customs.
Xi Jinping stresses about preserving the ethnic group of China
As a crucial component of China’s overall development, Xi Jinping has underlined the significance of conserving and advancing the Dong ethnic culture. He visited an exhibition center displaying Dong customs, looked at a local industry hub for weaving, dyeing, and embroidery, and examined the village’s cultural sites.
He recognized the Dong people’s rich cultural heritage and aesthetic attractiveness by emphasizing features like stilt houses, historic villages, traditional music, and batik workmanship.
Furthermore, Xi connected economic development with cultural preservation, voicing the hope that villages would live better lives and advance rural rehabilitation with the help of the Party and the government.
His visit served as a reminder that preserving ethnic customs is important for both cultural preservation and ensuring that these communities may prosper as China pursues modernity.
