Pope Francis to be discharged from the hospital

Doctors announced that they will discharge Pope Francis from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday, and he will need at least two months of rest at the Vatican.

Doctors hospitalized Pope, 88, on February 14 after he developed double pneumonia from a serious respiratory illness. He had “two very critical episodes” over the last five weeks where his “life was in danger,” according to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the physicians who are caring for the Pope.

“The Pope was never intubated and always remained alert and oriented despite the seriousness of his condition,” Dr. Alfieri continued. The Pope’s doctors say he remains stable and no longer has pneumonia, though he has not fully recovered.

Pope set to leave hospital after longest stay

This is the longest hospital stay the Pope has had in Gemelli since his election twelve years ago. CNN reports that despite his absence for weeks, the Vatican has maintained his presence by posting a picture of him praying at the hospital’s chapel last weekend along with a brief audio message from him.

His release follows confirmation from the Vatican that his pneumonia is now under control and that his condition is improving.
