PM Oli claims India played the role in pro-monarchy movement

Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has accused India of influencing the country’s pro-monarchy movement and vowed to reveal details in Parliament.

During a recent meeting with senior leaders of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (UML), he allegedly said these things.

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s plan to unite Nepal’s three biggest political parties against the former king has faced a setback. The Nepali Congress, the largest party in the ruling coalition, decided to uphold the Constitution but refused to join forces with the CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre.

Oli’s allegations against India

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli strongly accused India of influencing and bolstering the recent surge in pro-monarchy sentiments in Nepal during a high-level meeting with central office-bearers of the ruling Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML). He suggested that outside influences were partly fueling calls for the restoration of the monarchy and the designation of Nepal as a Hindu state.

Oli added that his government is constantly monitoring former King Gyanendra Shah, whom he accused of playing a key role in the movement. He stated that they might take legal action, including arresting the former king, to prevent any unconstitutional activities.

He also declared his plan to introduce evidence in Parliament that would reveal India’s purported role in the escalating pro-monarchy protests. In addition to raising political difficulties, his comments have highlighted Nepal’s changing relationship with its influential neighbor.

Emergence of Pro-monarchy sentiments in Nepal

There have been several pro-monarchy rallies in Nepal in recent weeks. Thousands of people in Kathmandu welcomed former King Gyanendra Shah, chanting slogans for the restoration of the monarchy and Nepal’s status as a Hindu state. Republican political groups worry that these protests may change the country’s political landscape.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has refuted these claims, saying that India has no role in Nepal’s domestic political activities. India respects Nepal’s sovereignty and has no plans to meddle in its internal matters, he underlined.

The display of Yogi Adityanath’s image has ignited the allegations

The presentation of a billboard featuring Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, at a pro-monarchy demonstration in Kathmandu has further stoked speculations over India’s involvement.

Through the Gorakhnath Mutt, a Hindu religious organization, Adityanath has historical ties to Nepal’s past monarchy and is well-known for his strong pro-Hindu views. Some have interpreted his appearance at the protest as proof that the pro-monarchy movement had outside backing.

Nepal’s political dynamics are now more complicated due to the country’s rise of pro-monarchy attitudes and claims of outside intervention. Nepal’s future political course will be greatly influenced by the reactions of both domestic political organizations and its neighbors as the situation develops.
