Mass protests erupt in response to Kulman Ghising’s dismissal

Protests broke out in Kathmandu after the government decided to remove Kulman Ghising from his role as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority.

Many individuals expressed their dissatisfaction and unhappiness with the decision by taking to the streets. Ghising has a large public following and was instrumental in bringing an end to years of power outages in Nepal; his dismissal has drawn harsh criticism.

Many protesters are accusing the administration of putting political interests ahead of the advancement of the country, and they are seeking answers from it. “Where is the government heading? Cutting electricity and removing Kulman,” the question arose.

The Cabinet removed Kulman Ghising on Monday, who had been serving as the managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority since 2021. It appointed Hitendra Dev Shakya as the new NEA chief to succeed him.

The administration removed him after months of conflict, mainly accusing him of insubordination, criticizing his decision to sign an energy contract with India, and opposing his efforts to collect unpaid debts from multiple corporations.

The government of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation accused Ghising of failing to fulfill his obligations under the terms of his performance contract.

Discontent within the administration resulted from Ghising’s alleged signing of a power purchase agreement with India without first obtaining government clearance.

Ghising allegedly cut off electricity to a number of industrial enterprises in spite of repeated requests from the government, further straining relations with officials.

It’s important to note that Ghising has denied these accusations, arguing for his conduct and casting doubt on the legality of his termination. He has petitioned the Supreme Court for quick restoration and the reversal of the government’s decision.

The situation has triggered public protests and political outrage, with opposition parties accusing the administration of sabotaging national progress in the energy industry and demanding explanations from the prime minister.

Supporters are protesting on the road

Members of the All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Revolutionary) bravely protested the decision to fire Ghising by burning an effigy of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. This action demonstrates the intensity of public ire and the lengths people will go to in order to express their disapproval.

The scandal that surrounded Ghising’s termination has also influenced politics. Parliamentary sessions have been interrupted by opposition parties who are asking that the administration explain the reasoning for the decision.

In order to address the protest-related deadlock and find a solution to the rising tensions, Speaker Devraj Ghimire called meetings with the chief whips of the main political parties.

The government has increased security at NEA headquarters and other associated offices in reaction to the growing protests in order to avert possible incidents. The severity of the public’s response and the government’s concern for upholding order in the face of mass protest are highlighted by this increased security.
