Police arrested a 53-year-old man in Noida’s Sector 15 on Friday afternoon for allegedly murdering his wife, Asma, by repeatedly hitting her head with a hammer, driven by suspicions of her having an extramarital affair.
After the murder, the man reportedly went straight to the police station to turn himself in and confess. The victim, identified as 42-year-old Asma Khan, was a civil engineering graduate from Jamia Millia Islamia University and worked at a private company in Noida’s Sector 62.
Her husband, Noor-ul-lah Haider, had turned to online stock trading from home after losing his job. The police said that his suspicions of an affair sparked the tragic incident.
Noida Police’s statements
“Haider suspected that his wife maintained a relationship with another man which frequently sparked disputes between them,” said Ram Badan Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Noida.
When a furious argument broke out between the couple on Friday, the tension reached a breaking point, and Haider attacked her with a hammer, striking her in the head many times.
After the murder, the accused went to the Sector 20 police station to surrender. Since the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Phase 1 police station, they registered a case and continued the investigation. “He was produced before the court and sent to jail,” the DCP added.
Victims families’ reaction
After marrying in 2005, Asma and Haider had two kids: a 15-year-old daughter in Class 8 and a 19-year-old son pursuing an engineering degree.
The family rented the lower floor of their two-story home in Sector 15 to paying visitors, while they used the upper floor. Both kids and their grandma were in a different room of the house when the incident happened.
