Nepal Government May Ban Facebook, X, and Instagram

Nepal’s Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, has warned that the government will ban social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram if they fail to register in Nepal by the end of this month.

Final Warning to Social Media Companies

Speaking at the 8th General Convention of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists in Rupandehi, Minister Gurung explained that the government had already informed companies like Meta about the registration requirement two months ago. However, these companies have not responded yet.

“There’s only one working day left until the end of the month. If platforms like Facebook don’t register, we’ll shut them down. That’s the government’s final stance,” Gurung declared.

Reason Behind the Move

Minister Gurung said the government wants to control rising scams on social media and collect taxes from these platforms, just like other countries do.

“In countries like India, social media platforms register and pay taxes. But here in Nepal, they’re operating without registration. That needs to change,” he added.

He clarified that the government does not plan to shut down online media outlets. He also reassured journalists that press freedom will remain safe. Gurung further mentioned that the government will present a new cyber security bill in the upcoming session of Parliament.

TikTok Already Registered

Among the major platforms, only TikTok has completed its registration in Nepal. This means TikTok will continue to operate without any problem. But the future of Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube remains uncertain unless they register soon.
