New York, Washington, and dozens of U.S. cities saw thousands of protesters rally on Saturday, April 19, 2025. Organized by the “50501” movement, the demonstrations targeted President Donald Trump’s policies.

Protesters marched against mass deportations, government job cuts, and threats to civil rights. They called Trump’s actions authoritarian and a danger to democracy.

Why Are Protests Happening?

Demonstrators are angry about Trump’s immigration crackdowns, including the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly sent to an El Salvadoran prison.

Many also oppose plans to shrink federal agencies and cut programs like Social Security. Protesters, carrying signs like “No Fascists” and “Impeach + Remove,” say Trump violates constitutional rights. Some rallies targeted Elon Musk, a Trump adviser, for his role in downsizing government.

This is the second wave of protests this month, following earlier “Hands Off!” rallies on April 5. The 50501 group, which stands for 50 protests in 50 states, aims to build a pro-democracy movement.

Over 400 events took place, from Manhattan to small towns, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War. Protesters want to protect democratic norms and resist what they see as Trump’s overreach.

Trump’s Reaction

President Trump has not directly addressed Saturday’s protests. He previously ignored similar demonstrations, focusing instead on his policy agenda.

Organizers plan more rallies to turn public discontent into votes. The 50501 movement calls for 11 million people to join their cause. Protests may grow as Trump’s policies, like new tariffs and deportations, take effect.
