UK-US Trade Deal Talks Progress, but No Guarantees

A senior UK minister has said a trade deal with the United States is “possible” but not “certain.” Pat McFadden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, shared this view on April 27, 2025, during an interview on Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips on Sky News.

He emphasized that the UK is working hard to secure an agreement but won’t rush into a deal just for the sake of it. McFadden also rejected the idea that the UK must choose between trade deals with the US and the European Union, saying both are important for the UK economy.

Background of the Talks

The UK has been eager to strike a trade deal with the US, especially after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on UK goods, including 25% on car imports and 10% on other products.

These tariffs, introduced earlier in April 2025, have pushed the UK to negotiate to reduce their economic impact. The talks gained momentum after UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, DC, on April 25, 2025.

Reeves described the discussions as “positive and upbeat” but stressed the UK won’t compromise on standards, like allowing hormone-treated beef or chlorinated chicken.

The UK is also balancing these talks with efforts to strengthen trade ties with the EU post-Brexit.

What Happened and Where

On April 27, 2025, McFadden spoke cautiously about the trade deal, noting “a serious level of engagement” at high levels. His comments came days after Reeves’ Washington meeting and a phone call between UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Trump on April 18, 2025, where trade was a key topic. McFadden’s statement was made in London during the Sky News interview. Meanwhile, the UK is also exploring a youth mobility scheme with the EU, showing its focus on multiple trade fronts. The US has pushed for lower tariffs on car imports, but the UK insists on maintaining its food and safety standards.

US Perspective and Challenges

US officials have shown optimism about a potential deal. Vice President JD Vance said there’s a “good chance” of an agreement, and a White House official suggested a deal could be finalized soon.

However, the US has made demands, like cutting tariffs on agricultural products, which the UK has resisted to protect its standards. Some US figures have also raised concerns about UK laws on free speech, linking them to trade talks, though this remains a side issue. The UK faces pressure to balance US demands with its EU trade goals, as aligning too closely with one could complicate relations with the other.
