Yemen’s Houthi movement has vowed to continue attacking Israel despite intensified Israeli airstrikes targeting their positions. The group claims their actions support the Palestinian cause, following heightened violence in Gaza.
Houthi political leader Mohammed al-Bukhaiti declared that the group will escalate its military operations until “genocide in Gaza” ends and the blockade is lifted. He stated their attacks are a direct response to Israeli aggression.
Israeli Airstrikes Target Houthi Infrastructure
Israel has launched multiple airstrikes in Yemen in retaliation for Houthi missile and drone attacks. These strikes targeted airports, power facilities, and other key infrastructure, resulting in casualties. Reports confirm at least four deaths and multiple injuries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned of a prolonged campaign, saying their military response is “just getting started.”
The Houthis have launched hypersonic missiles aimed at Israel, triggering alarms in Tel Aviv. While the Israeli military intercepted these missiles, the Houthis claim success in their operations. The group has also disrupted maritime traffic in the Red Sea, broadening the conflict’s scope.
UN and International Responses
The UN Security Council adopted resolution 2722 on January 10, 2024, condemning Houthi attacks and reaffirming freedom of navigation. UN officials urged restraint, condemning both Houthi aggression and Israel’s retaliatory strikes. Concerns over Iran’s support for the Houthis were also raised.
The U.S. initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian in December 2023, forming a coalition to secure Red Sea navigation. This effort involves military support from over 20 nations, including the UK. Both the U.S. and UK conducted strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen, aiming to deter further attacks.
Diplomatic Efforts to De-escalate Conflict
A coalition of 44 states condemned Houthi interference with maritime navigation in December 2023. Many countries have called for a ceasefire in Gaza, urging all parties to exercise restraint and adhere to international law.
The conflict continues to widen, involving regional and international actors. While the Houthis frame their actions as defending Palestine, Israel receives strong backing from allies like the U.S., which views Iranian support for the Houthis as a significant threat.
