First HMPV Cases Reported in India

The first confirmed cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in India emerged on January 6, 2025, in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Doctors diagnosed an eight-month-old boy and a three-month-old girl with the virus. The boy remains hospitalized, while the girl recovered and returned home after treatment for bronchopneumonia.

Health officials believe local transmission caused the infections, as neither infant had recent travel history. These cases have sparked concern amid rising respiratory illnesses in China, where HMPV has been widespread recently.

What Is Human Metapneumovirus?

Global and Local Circulation

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) confirmed that HMPV circulates globally, including in India. Routine surveillance identified the recent cases in Bengaluru, suggesting ongoing local presence.

ICMR and Health Ministry Response

ICMR emphasized that India is well-prepared to manage potential increases in HMPV-related illnesses. The Union Health Ministry clarified that HMPV is not a new virus in India and assured the public that the health system can handle any developments. Both agencies highlighted that the recent cases are unrelated to China’s surge in respiratory infections.

Monitoring Efforts

Health authorities, including ICMR, are closely monitoring HMPV trends. A Joint Monitoring Group convened to assess the situation and ensure readiness against respiratory viruses. These proactive steps aim to protect public health.
