Tibet Earthquake : 9 Dead, Chinese Authorities

A powerful earthquake struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of China on January 7, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals.

The earthquake, which was initially reported to have a magnitude of 6.8 by Chinese authorities, was later measured at 7.1 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

It occurred at 9:05 AM local time and had a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the surface.

The epicenter was located near Dingri County, close to the city of Shigatse, which is significant in Tibetan Buddhism as it is the traditional residence of the Panchen Lama.

Reports indicate that many buildings collapsed in the affected area, particularly in the townships of Changsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo. Video footage showed extensive damage, with crumbled shop fronts and debris littering the streets.

Tremors from the earthquake were felt across a wide region, including Nepal, where residents in Kathmandu experienced strong shaking. Officials in Nepal reported no immediate injuries but mobilized local security forces to assess potential damage.

The seismic activity was also felt as far away as northern India, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

This earthquake adds to a history of seismic activity in the region, which has experienced numerous earthquakes over the past century.

Notably, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu in April 2015, resulting in nearly 9,000 fatalities.

As this story develops, more information regarding the extent of damage and potential casualties is expected to emerge.
