Jose Mourinho slams Turkish Super League as ‘Toxic’

After calling Galatasaray’s victory a “scandal” and asserting that the league is “toxic,” Jose Mourinho’s remarks are in the headlines again.

Mourinho has previously criticized the Super Lig refereeing, stating Fenerbahce had to “fight the opponents and the system” and that the VAR was “man of the match” during a thrilling victory in November.

Jose Mourinho: Coach of Fenerbahce

As one of the best and most successful managers in football history, José Mourinho is a well-known Portuguese football manager and former player.

At Sporting CP, Porto, and Barcelona, Mourinho started his career as a translator and assistant coach to the renowned manager Bobby Robson.

Before taking on head coaching responsibilities, he later worked at Barcelona under Louis van Gaal.

José Mourinho is the head coach of Fenerbahçe, a well-known football team in Turkey’s Süper Lig, as of January 2025.

In June 2024, he took on this role, which was his first management position in Turkish football.

Fenerbahçe has been playing well under Mourinho’s guidance, and they are now ranked second in the league.

They will have a difficult time catching up to Galatasaray, the league leaders who are still unbeaten and have an eight-point lead.

There has been some controversy during Mourinho’s tenure. He has been outspoken about what he sees as Galatasaray bias and has expressed annoyance at refereeing calls that, in his opinion, favor his opponents.

He called the league a “scandal” in a recent statement, stressing the challenges of competing in such a setting.

What happened?

Following Sunday’s 2-1 victory for Fenerbahce, manager Mourinho launched an unprecedented tirade against the Super Lig’s officials and the league as a whole. “What are the people afraid of in this country?” he also posed to the Turkish media.

Jose Mourinho has launched a tirade against the Turkish league, calling it full of “scandal.”

When league leaders and reigning champions Galatasaray defeated Goztepe 2-1 on Saturday, there was controversy surrounding the game.

What Jose Mourinho said

He told the media “ We played well. We dominated the match. We created clear positions. We couldn’t pass the ball in positions we called half chances. It’s strange that this match ended 2-1. This match could have been 6-7-8. I’m happy with the game but not because of the opportunities we missed.”

He said , “The only thing I can say is that after 25 years as a coach and 35 years in football , 10 as an assistant, I have never seen anything similar to this.” “It has a dimension that goes above anything that is understandable.”

He also added, “Everyone was saying the same thing—scandal, scandal, scandal…” I learned a new word in Turkish. Scandal, scandal, scandal, but I think some of you like it. In this country, many people like it.

“Nothing to say about the player commitment. In terms of the trust and the feeling that something is toxic? We feel, obviously we feel, and I think the opposition feels it.
