Iran is considering changing its capital from Tehran to Makran. This decision stems from Tehran’s overpopulation, water scarcity, power shortages, and environmental challenges.

The government views the Makran region, located in Sistan and Baluchestan Province near the Gulf of Oman, as a strategic and economic asset. This coastal area could develop into a significant commercial and maritime hub.

Tehran currently struggles with severe environmental and infrastructural issues, including overpopulation, water shortages, and power disruptions.

The authorities see Makran’s coastal location as an opportunity to boost economic growth and enhance strategic advantages.

Although the relocation is not immediate, experts and councils are evaluating its feasibility. Two councils are analyzing the practicality of the move and exploring ways to establish a sea-based economy in Makran.

Critics argue that the plan poses significant financial and logistical challenges.

The public remains divided. Some individuals doubt the feasibility of the relocation, while others view it as a strategic initiative to improve trade capabilities.

Discussions about moving the capital have continued sporadically since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 but often stalled due to economic constraints.

The idea gained renewed attention during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency and is now under active consideration by the current administration.
