Another Fatal Collision of ski before

On Christmas Day 2024, a 13-year-old skier lost his life in an avalanche  not far from the spot where a British woman collided with another skier.

A snowboarder above might have caused the avalanche, which swept the child off his feet and buried him while he was skiing with his family.

Rescue teams, including gendarmerie members and dog teams, quickly responded and transported the child to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him deceased later that day.

These two incidents have cast a shadow over the popular resort, raising concerns about safety on the slopes.

In major ski resorts, especially on difficult slopes, skiing accidents—especially those that result in fatalities—sadly happen frequently.

Between 40 and 50 people die each year in skiing-related incidents throughout the Alps and other popular ski locations, though the precise numbers vary by year and locale.

Numerous factors, including accidents with other skiers, trees, rocks, or fixed objects, as well as falls that induce trauma, cardiac problems, or avalanches, can cause these fatalities.

Safety Concerns and Moving Forward

Skiing is a dangerous sport by nature, according to a safety assessment from the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), a trade group for ski resort owners and operators in the United States. But the NSAA also described deadly skiing accidents as “rare” in the report.

In the past decade, U.S. ski resorts have averaged fewer than one fatality per 1 miilion skier visists, accoridng to the recent report. During the 2023-2024 ski season, there were 35 fatalities across 60.5 million skier visits nationwide.

That same season, 49 catastrophic injuries were reported in the same number of visits. While these numbers reflect the overall safety of skiing, they also highlight the risks that still exist on the slopes.

Les Arcs is still open and a well-liked location for winter sports fans. Officials have cautioned all skiers, though, especially on difficult and steep slopes.

The event serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that come with skiing and the value of being alert when on the slopes.
