Congress Declined from Delhi BJP Make a Comeback

Once a dominant force, the Congress has failed to regain its former influence, suffering consecutive defeats since 2015. The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections highlight this ongoing struggle, with early trends indicating another poor performance for the party.

Electoral Performance

The Congress party has struggled in Delhi since 2013. The 2014 general election was a major setback, as the BJP secured a comfortable majority. In 2019, Congress won only 52 of the 542 contested Lok Sabha seats. The party also performed poorly in state assembly elections, shrinking its political presence further.

In Delhi, Congress has been declining since 2015. That year, it failed to win any of the 70 assembly seats, and the trend repeated in 2020. The 2025 Delhi elections are following a similar pattern, with early counting trends showing no signs of a Congress recovery. Exit polls predict a fourth consecutive defeat.

The Rise of BJP

The BJP, led by Narendra Modi, has reshaped Indian politics with a right-wing ideology and a vision for a “new India.” The party currently governs 17 states, either independently or through alliances, showcasing its dominance.

In Delhi, the BJP has been out of power since 1998. However, early trends in the 2025 Assembly elections show the BJP leading in 43 seats. This suggests a major comeback after 27 years, reinforcing its growing strength in the capital.

AAP’s Stronghold in Delhi

Since 2013, AAP has been a formidable force in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal first became Chief Minister in 2013 but resigned after 49 days due to disagreements with Congress. In 2015, AAP won 67 out of 70 seats, forming a stable government. The party repeated its success in 2020 by winning 62 seats.

Despite BJP’s resurgence, AAP remains a key player. Early trends in the 2025 elections show AAP securing 24 seats, maintaining a significant presence in Delhi politics.

Internal Issues in Congress

Congress faces multiple internal challenges that have contributed to its downfall:

Leadership Crisis

The party has struggled with centralized leadership and a “high command” culture, alienating grassroots workers.

Senior Leaders’ Resignations

Several leaders have left the party, citing dissatisfaction with its direction.

Lack of Visionary Strategies

The party has failed to offer a compelling alternative to BJP and AAP.

Organizational Weakness

Internal divisions and poor election management have weakened its ability to contest effectively.

Disunity within the INDIA Bloc

The opposition alliance, INDIA bloc, has also shown fractures. Key leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav have supported AAP over Congress, further diminishing the party’s relevance in Delhi politics.

Funding Challenges

Congress has faced financial constraints, affecting its election campaigns. In 2019-2020, corporate funding for the party was significantly lower than that of the BJP, limiting its ability to compete effectively.

UPA Government’s Legacy

The decline of Congress can also be traced back to its tenure in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Issues such as corruption scandals, high inflation, and policy paralysis created strong anti-incumbency sentiments, leading to its downfall in successive elections.

2025 Delhi Election Results (FINAL)

  • BJP 48 Seats
  • AAP Securing 22 Seats
  • Congress Failing to Make an Impact with O

With these results, the BJP appears set to form a government in Delhi after 27 years, marking a significant shift in the political scene.

The Congress party’s decline in Delhi is a result of internal weaknesses, leadership crises, and the rise of stronger opponents like the BJP and AAP. While AAP continues to hold a strong position, the BJP is making a remarkable comeback. Unless Congress addresses its structural issues and reinvents its strategy, its future in Delhi politics remains uncertain.
