Arne Slot’s Liverpool took a big step toward the Premier League title with a crucial 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
The win was even more impressive because Liverpool hadn’t won away at Manchester City for ten years.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s clinical finish and a spectacular set-piece goal gave Liverpool a crucial victory. They now have all three points and have increased their lead at the top of the league to eleven points.
But Arne Slot’s team easily defeated the defending champs, ending that run in spectacular fashion. The match statistics show that they performed flawlessly, remained disciplined, and took City’s pressure well.
Liverpool won by 2-0
Liverpool pulled off a convincing 2-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, February 23, completing a Premier League double over their rivals.
Goals from Mo Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half secured the win, helping Liverpool extend their lead to nine points at the top of the table.
Arne Slot has already accomplished a noteworthy feat in his first season as manager: he is the first manager of Liverpool to defeat the reigning champions in the league twice since the 1974–75 campaign.
Bob Paisley, who guided Liverpool to a First Division double over Leeds United that year, was the last manager to achieve this accomplishment.
With this impressive achievement, Slot is now in a strong position to guide Liverpool to their 20th Premier League title, potentially securing the championship in his very first season in charge.
Arne Slot: “This was the result of defense rather than attack.”
Although Manchester City was a threat in the first half, Slot admitted that they didn’t generate many clear-cut opportunities.
Slot said, “The first half played out better for them than for us, apart from the score. I don’t think they had too many big chances, but it felt like they were going to score.”
However, the second half was a different story, with City failing to generate any significant opportunities.
Slot also emphasized the importance of solid defense against a team like City, known for their ball control and possession.
“Ideally, we have the ball more than the other team. But City, when it comes to ball possession, they like it a lot and are so comfortable on the ball. The only chance you have to win here is to defend very well.” he added.
Slot changed liverpool’s formation
In the match against Manchester City, Slot altered Liverpool’s formation, and it appears the Dutchman also made adjustments to his possession strategy.
With the ball in control of 57.3% of games thus far this season, the Reds have averaged the third-highest possession in the Premier League.
But that possession-heavy style of play was not evident at the Etihad, as Slot’s team switched back to a more defensive-first counterattack strategy after taking a two-goal lead.
Nevertheless, the Reds would only possess 34% of the ball versus City, which is their lowest percentage in a Premier League victory ever.
