Pope Francis’ Health Improves, But Hospital Stay Continues

Pope Francis’ health is improving, but he still requires in-hospital therapy, the Vatican announced on Saturday.

The 88-year-old pontiff has spent a month at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. Doctors report that his condition is stable and gradually improving. However, the Vatican clarified that he is not yet ready for discharge, as he still needs medical and physical therapy.

Ongoing Treatment and Recovery

Pope Francis looks on, on the day he leads the Vespers prayer service to celebrate the conversion of St. Paul, at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, in Rome, Italy, January 25, 2025.

“The clinical conditions of the Holy Father have remained stable, confirming the progress shown in the last week,” the Vatican stated.

Francis continues to receive motor and respiratory physiotherapy. He is also undergoing high-flow oxygen therapy to reduce the need for non-invasive ventilation during the day.

Global Support and Well-Wishes

Thousands of letters and messages continue to pour in from around the world. Italy’s postal service reported a surge in mail addressed to the Pope, handling up to 150 kilograms more mail per day.

“The international community has shown great affection and closeness,” said Antonello Chidichimo, head of the Fiumicino postal sorting center.

The Vatican has not confirmed a discharge date. Pope Francis remains in a special suite on the hospital’s 10th floor.

Messages from Around the World

On Friday, the anniversary of his 12 years as Pope, Francis received a video message from his favorite football team, Buenos Aires’ San Lorenzo club. Support also came from Brazilian footballer Neymar and Italian football legend Ciro Ferrara.

In a previous statement, the Pope thanked well-wishers for their support, especially children who sent letters and drawings.

Despite his hospitalization, Francis remains in good spirits, continuing to connect with his followers through messages of gratitude and faith.
