World heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman dies

George Foreman, a former heavyweight boxing world champion, died at the age of 76. He led an extraordinary life as a businessman, pastor, and athlete.

The fierce heavyweight, who famously lost the “Rumble in the Jungle” to Muhammad Ali before making a remarkable comeback as a champion and successful businessman, passed away on Friday night.

Foreman’s family shared the news of his death on social media without revealing how or where he passed. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand- and great-grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” his family wrote.

“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world, he was deeply respected. A force for good, a man of discipline and conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name—for his family.”

Former world heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman earned fame for his incredible career in the ring and his powerful punching ability. Born in Marshall, Texas, on January 10, 1949, he became one of the most recognizable names in boxing. Foreman fathered 12 children, and interestingly, five of his sons share the same name—George Edward Foreman.

In 1974, Foreman first became well-known throughout the world after losing to Muhammad Ali in the renowned “Rumble in the Jungle.” Despite this defeat, he made a stunning return in the 1990s, becoming the oldest world heavyweight champion in history when he regained the championship at age 45.

In addition to boxing, George Foreman made millions of dollars as a successful businessman, most notably by creating the George Foreman Grill. He also rebranded himself as a philanthropist and a devoted preacher.

Foreman earned renown for his steadfast devotion to his family, humility, and strong faith. He established himself as one of the best boxers of all time by winning two world heavyweight titles and an Olympic gold medal.

Foreman’s legendary comeback

George Foreman resigned from boxing in 1977, exhausted and disillusioned, and after experiencing a religious experience, he spent the majority of the following ten years preaching and working with children in Houston.

In 1987, at nearly forty years old, he unexpectedly returned to the ring, aiming to prove he was still a formidable fighter. He won several bouts in the following years, but in a tough title battle in 1991, Evander Holyfield defeated him.

Foreman challenged Michael Moorer for the heavyweight title in 1994. The reigning champion, Moorer, dominated the first nine rounds. As Foreman grew older, he seemed out of rhythm, but in the tenth round, he stunned everyone by landing a powerful right hand that sent Moorer to the ground, securing a thrilling victory.

Foreman also dabbled in acting, starring in a short-lived sitcom called “George” in the 1990s. Later, in 2022, he made an appearance on the reality singing competition “The Masked Singer.” His life story was brought to the big screen with a biographical movie released in 2023.
