Israel Airstrikes on Lebanon Kill 7 and injure 40 people

On Saturday evening, fresh Israeli airstrikes hit eastern and southern Lebanon, leaving seven people dead and 40 others injured.

The Israeli military claimed to strike a Hezbollah command center and rocket launchers in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah and Palestinian factions operate in Lebanon, yet no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Israeli Air Force launched a second round of strikes in Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), targeting what they said were Hezbollah command headquarters, infrastructure, militants, rocket launchers, and a weapons storage facility.

Reason for the attack

Israel’s continued campaign against Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant organization active in southern Lebanon, included the bombings on Lebanon.

Hezbollah’s rockets and weaponry pose a serious security threat to Israel. The strikes were likely due to Hezbollah’s growing presence and increased rocket fire from Lebanon into Israel.

To impair Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and stop more attacks, Israel’s military targets the organization’s command centers, infrastructure, and weapons storage facilities. Israel has said it will keep acting against Hezbollah in Lebanon if the organization threatens its security.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have been rising, with both sides taking part in military operations. Hezbollah’s connections to Iran, which has supported other militia organizations around the Middle East, are among the larger regional factors that have an impact on the situation.

When Hezbollah terrorists captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border incursion in 2006, it consequently sparked one of the biggest and most devastating wars between Israel and Lebanon.

Israel retaliated by attacking Hezbollah locations and other targets in southern Lebanon with aircraft.

Hezbollah fired thousands of rockets into northern Israel, causing serious damage and fatalities. As a result, over a thousand Lebanese and 165 Israelis lost their lives during the roughly monthlong conflict.

Israel targeted Hezbollah sites in Lebanon with many attacks in 2019. Growing tensions near Israel’s northern border, where Hezbollah was allegedly planning to assault Israeli military sites prompted these strikes.

The strikes aimed to destroy Hezbollah’s military facilities, including rocket launchers, weapons storage sites, and surveillance equipment. For instance, Israeli airplanes struck a weapons storage site in one notable incident; however, they reported no injuries.

Conflicts between Israeli and Hezbollah soldiers occurred along the Israel-Lebanon border in 2021. These intensified after a brief escalation of hostilities in Gaza and tensions in Jerusalem.

In response to Israeli airstrikes in Syria that targeted Hezbollah-related equipment, Hezbollah reportedly fired missiles into northern Israel.

In turn, these instances highlight the ongoing nature of tensions between Israel and Lebanon, particularly in relation to the presence and actions of Hezbollah in the area.
