The incident, described by officials as a possible act of anti-Semitic terrorism, has sparked widespread condemnation and an ongoing investigation.

What Happened?

On Wednesday night at approximately 9:08 p.m., a gunman opened fire outside the Capital Jewish Museum, located in the 500 block of 3rd Street NW, near the FBI’s Washington Field Office. The victims, a man and a woman employed by the Israeli embassy, were exiting an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee when the attack occurred.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, approached a group of four people, drew a handgun, and shot the two victims at close range. Both were pronounced dead at the scene despite efforts by emergency responders. Rodriguez then entered the museum, where he was detained by event security. While in custody, he reportedly shouted “Free, free Palestine,” according to D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith.

Background of the Incident

The shooting took place during a Young Diplomats Reception, an annual event organized by the American Jewish Committee for Jewish professionals and diplomats aged 22 to 45.

The museum, which opened in 2023, had recently received a security grant from the D.C. government due to heightened concerns about anti-Semitism and a new exhibit on LGBTQ Jewish history.

The victims were reportedly a couple, with the man planning to propose to his girlfriend the following week in Jerusalem. The incident occurred in a busy area of downtown D.C., close to federal buildings and tourist attractions, raising concerns about targeted violence against Jewish institutions. Jewish organizations have increased security nationwide since the onset of the Gaza conflict 19 months ago, reflecting a broader climate of tension.

Investigation Underway

The Washington Metropolitan Police Department, with support from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, is leading the investigation. Authorities are examining whether the shooting was a hate crime or an act of terrorism.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, and Rodriguez, who had no prior contact with law enforcement, is in custody. Police noted that he was seen pacing outside the museum before the attack, suggesting premeditation. The FBI’s Assistant Director, Steven Jensen, called the incident a “heinous crime” and is exploring potential ties to terrorism or bias-motivated violence. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice, emphasizing federal coordination with local authorities.

Official and Community Response

The shooting has drawn strong reactions from U.S. and Israeli officials. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed shock, calling the attack an “anti-Semitic murder.” Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon labeled it a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism.” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser condemned the violence, stating, “We will not tolerate anti-Semitism or hate in our city.”

The American Jewish Committee’s CEO, Ted Deutch, expressed devastation, focusing on support for the victims’ families. President Donald Trump, posting on Truth Social, called for an end to such killings, describing them as driven by anti-Semitism. Community members gathered at the scene, with some displaying Israeli flags in solidarity.

The attack has reignited discussions about anti-Semitism and the safety of Jewish institutions in the U.S. The Capital Jewish Museum, already on high alert, underscores the challenges faced by Jewish organizations amid rising tensions.

Mayor Bowser pledged to work with local Jewish groups to enhance security. The incident also raises questions about the intersection of political rhetoric and violence, with some Israeli officials linking global leaders’ statements to emboldening such acts. As the investigation continues, authorities aim to clarify Rodriguez’s motives and prevent further violence in a city shaken by this tragedy.
