Zelenskyy was not invited to the main leaders’ session. He held separate talks with Trump instead. The meeting aimed to address Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia.

Tensions stem from a February 2025 Oval Office clash. Zelenskyy and Trump argued over diplomacy with Russia. Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelenskyy’s lack of gratitude for U.S. aid.

A reporter also mocked Zelenskyy’s casual attire. The meeting soured U.S.-Ukraine relations, pausing American military support.

Zelenskyy’s Formal Appearance

Zelenskyy wore a black suit at the summit, ditching his usual military-style outfit. This followed criticism of his casual look in February.

The change signaled an effort to rebuild ties with Trump. Ukrainians rallied behind Zelenskyy, slamming the earlier attire critique. His formal look drew media attention.

What Trump Promised

Trump described the 50-minute meeting as “substantive” and “nice.” He promised to discuss Ukraine’s “difficulty” and explore peace options. Trump hinted at supplying Patriot missiles. He also touted a U.S.-Ukraine deal for critical minerals. No firm commitments on new military aid were made.

Zelenskyy called the talks “long and substantive.” He thanked Trump for U.S. support. They discussed ceasefire possibilities, sanctions on Russia, and arms procurement. Zelenskyy pushed for more U.S. investment in Ukraine’s defense industry. He expressed satisfaction with the meeting’s outcome.

Current Trump-Ukraine Relationship

The relationship remains strained but shows signs of repair. Trump’s administration has not requested new military aid for Ukraine.

European allies worry about fading U.S. support. The mineral deal and summit talks suggest cautious cooperation. Zelenskyy’s NATO push faces resistance from Trump’s skepticism.
