DRC President May Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

DRC President May Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix Tshisekedi, recently surprised many people by saying he might nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. This came after Trump helped Rwanda and the DRC sign a peace agreement in Washington, D.C. The deal is seen as an important step toward ending years of violence in central Africa.

What Was the Peace Deal About?

For many years, Rwanda and the DRC have had a tense relationship. They blamed each other for supporting armed rebel groups, especially in eastern Congo. This area has been full of fighting, and many people lost their homes or lives. Over 6 million people are believed to have died due to war, hunger, and disease linked to this conflict.

In June 2025, both countries signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement. The deal was made in Washington, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio present. Trump, who played a role in arranging the meeting, called the deal “a huge step for peace” and said it was “one of the proudest moments” of his post-presidency life.

Why Is Trump Being Considered for a Nobel Prize?

President Tshisekedi said Trump had made “real efforts” to bring peace to a region that had suffered for decades. He added that the peace deal would not have been possible without Trump’s involvement. That’s why Tshisekedi said he is seriously thinking about nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Why Is Trump Being Considered for a Nobel Prize?

Trump has often spoken about wanting peace around the world. He helped with peace talks in other areas too, such as between Israel and Arab countries, and between India and Pakistan. He has never received a Nobel Prize, and he has publicly claimed that the committee overlooked him in the past.

Trump was happy about the peace deal and thanked the leaders of both Rwanda and the DRC. He also said it proved he deserved a Nobel Prize. Many of his supporters agreed. Some leaders in Pakistan even said he should get the prize for helping reduce tensions in South Asia.

The Nobel Committee keeps all nominations private for 50 years, so we can’t confirm Trump’s official nomination any time soon

Why Some Experts Are Skeptical

While the peace deal offers hope, critics warn it might favor mineral interests rather than justice or long-term stability. Nobel laureate Denis Mukwege called it “vague” and said it “legitimizes the plundering of Congolese natural resources”

Also, the agreement did not include direct participation from the rebel group M23, which raises questions about its enforceability

No matter what people think about Donald Trump, this deal is a big step toward peace in Africa. The hope now is that both sides keep their promises. If they do, maybe the world will see real peace in Congo for the first time in decades.

Let’s hope this is the beginning of something good for the people, not just the politicians.
