For many years, Rwanda and the DRC have had a tense relationship. They blamed each other for supporting armed rebel groups, especially in eastern Congo. This area has been full of fighting, and many people lost their homes or lives. Over 6 million people are believed to have died due to war, hunger, and disease linked to this conflict.
In June 2025, both countries signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement. The deal was made in Washington, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio present. Trump, who played a role in arranging the meeting, called the deal “a huge step for peace” and said it was “one of the proudest moments” of his post-presidency life.

President Tshisekedi said Trump had made “real efforts” to bring peace to a region that had suffered for decades. Trump has often spoken about wanting peace around the world. He helped with peace talks in other areas too, such as between Israel and Arab countries, and between India and Pakistan. He has never received a Nobel Prize, and he has publicly claimed that the committee overlooked him in the past.

Also, the agreement did not include direct participation from the rebel group M23, which raises questions about its enforceability
