US refutes India's claim, asserts role in Pakistan-India ceasefire

US refutes India’s claim, asserts role in Pakistan-India ceasefire

A recent statement from the United States has started a new debate between three countries the US, India, and Pakistan. The US has openly said that it helped India and Pakistan agree to the 2021 ceasefire. However, India says the decision was made only between the two countries without outside help.

Background of the 2021 India-Pakistan ceasefire agreement

In February 2021, India and Pakistan made an important agreement to stop firing across the Line of Control (LoC). The LoC is a border area in Jammu and Kashmir where soldiers from both countries had been exchanging gunfire for years. This constant tension had made life difficult for the people living in nearby villages.

The ceasefire was seen as a peaceful step forward. Both countries agreed to follow the 2003 agreement which had broken down over the years.

India claims it made the ceasefire deal directly with Pakistan

India said the ceasefire was a result of direct talks between Indian and Pakistani military officials. According to Indian sources, there was no involvement from any third party or foreign country. They claimed that back-channel diplomacy and military-level talks led to the agreement.

India also suggested that the decision showed its strong and independent foreign policy. The message was clear: India doesn’t need outside help to talk with its neighbors.

Since the ceasefire, the number of such incidents has gone down a lot. People living near the border now feel safer. Children can go to school again, and farmers can work in their fields without fear of gunfire. It has brought some hope to the local communities.

India’s foreign policy and the question of outside interference

India has always said it prefers solving regional issues without third-party mediation. This is part of India’s long-standing foreign policy. The latest statement from the US challenges that idea, at least in this case.

This could lead to a diplomatic disagreement between India and the United States. Even though both countries are friendly, such statements can create tension.

When it comes to India-Pakistan relations, India has often rejected outside help or mediation. Whether the topic is Kashmir, border violence, or diplomatic talks, India has said these matters are between New Delhi and Islamabad only. India wants to be seen as a strong, confident country that can handle its own issues without needing advice or support from other nations. Even though India and the US have good relations overall, such topics can bring tension if not handled carefully. Trust between countries is important, especially when they are working together on big goals

Current status of the India-Pakistan relationship after the ceasefire

Since the ceasefire in 2021, the number of gunfire incidents along the LoC has reduced a lot. This has brought relief to border villages and local communities. However, India and Pakistan still do not have regular formal talks. The main issues especially Kashmir remain unsolved.

Both sides still blame each other for terrorism and cross-border trouble. So, while the ceasefire helped reduce violence, it hasn’t led to a full return of peace or friendship.
