Pakistan and EU agree to bolster counter-terror cooperation

In a major step toward improving global security, Pakistan and the European Union have agreed to deepen their cooperation in fighting terrorism and violent extremism. The announcement came during the 12th round of the Pakistan-EU Joint Commission meeting held in Islamabad, where senior officials from both sides discussed shared concerns about regional security, cross-border threats, and law enforcement collaboration.

A Renewed Commitment to Joint Counter-Terror Efforts

The latest agreement reflects a shared commitment between Pakistan and the EU to address growing threats posed by terrorist networks operating across South Asia and beyond. Both sides emphasized the importance of working together to combat terrorism in all its forms, especially in light of recent developments in Afghanistan and rising extremist activity in the region.

Pakistan, which has faced a long battle against domestic and cross-border militancy, reaffirmed its resolve to eliminate terror groups within its borders. The EU, meanwhile, offered support through capacity building, intelligence sharing, and assistance in strengthening Pakistan’s legal and institutional frameworks.

Focus on Capacity Building, Border Security, and Financial Tracking

One of the main areas of discussion was capacity building for Pakistan’s counter-terror institutions. The EU offered technical assistance and training programs for law enforcement agencies, border management authorities, and financial monitoring units that track terror funding.

Both parties also agreed to collaborate on disrupting the financial networks of terrorist organizations. This includes closer monitoring of money laundering, illegal remittances, and other funding channels often used to support extremist activities.

Shared Concerns Over Regional Instability and Emerging Threats

Officials expressed mutual concern over the deteriorating security situation in neighboring Afghanistan and its impact on regional stability. The rise of extremist groups such as the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) has posed new challenges for Pakistan’s western border and raised alarms in European capitals about the potential spread of extremist ideologies.

The EU praised Pakistan’s efforts to manage its security situation, while also encouraging stronger steps to protect human rights and ensure accountability in counter-terror operations. Both parties agreed that a balanced approach one that emphasizes security without compromising civil liberties — is essential for long-term peace.

Strengthening Diplomatic Ties Alongside Security Cooperation

Beyond counter-terrorism, the talks also touched on broader political and economic ties. The EU reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s development goals, especially in areas like trade, education, climate resilience, and digital governance. Both sides agreed that sustainable development and inclusive governance are vital to preventing conditions that allow terrorism to flourish.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to holding regular dialogues and implementing a roadmap to turn the counter-terrorism pledges into practical, long-term cooperation.
