Animesh Kujur Breaks National Record in Greece

Record-Shattering Run in 100m

Animesh Kujur, a 22-year-old sprinter from Odisha, smashed India’s 100m national record. He clocked 10.18 seconds at the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting in Greece on July 5, 2025.

This broke Gurindervir Singh’s previous record of 10.20 seconds. Kujur became the first Indian to run under 10.2 seconds. His performance earned him third place overall in the meet.

Who is Animesh Kujur?

Kujur hails from Sundargarh, Odisha, and is nicknamed “Airspeed Animesh” for his explosive stride. Born in a modest family, he rose through Odisha’s growing athletics system. He trains with the Indian Railways and competes on the European circuit for exposure. Kujur also holds the national 200m record, set at 20.32 seconds in May 2025.

Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting

The Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting is a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver event. Held in Vari, Greece, it attracts top sprinters globally. Kujur competed in Final B at the Municipal Stadium of Vari K Baglatzis.

He outran Greece’s Sotirios Garagganis (10.23s) and Finland’s Samuli Samuelsson (10.28s). The meet also saw Kujur help India’s 4x100m relay team to a second-place finish with 39.99 seconds.

A Breakthrough Year for Kujur

2025 has been a stellar year for Kujur. He broke the 200m national record twice, first at 20.40 seconds in April, then at 20.32 seconds in May at the Asian Athletics Championships. His 100m record in Greece adds to his legacy. Kujur’s consistency has earned him praise as India’s “Usain Bolt.” Social media buzzed with congratulations, with the Odisha government lauding his global impact.

What’s Next for India’s Fastest Man?

Kujur’s 10.18s is a milestone, but he’s not done. At 22, he’s seen as a rising star with potential to break the 10-second barrier a feat achieved by fewer than 180 runners globally.

Experts believe with better training and support, Kujur could compete for medals at world championships. He’s expected to race in more European meets to boost his World Athletics ranking. India’s sprinting future looks bright with Kujur leading the charge
