The match, a showcase of high drama and intense rivalry, saw Barcelona claim their 32nd Copa del Rey title, further solidifying their dominance in the competition.

Goals from Pedri, Ferran Torres, and a stunning strike by Jules Koundé secured the win, while Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouaméni found the net in a valiant but ultimately futile effort.

A Clásico for the Ages

The 260th competitive El Clásico lived up to its billing, delivering a rollercoaster of emotions for the 26,000 fans in attendance. Barcelona, under the guidance of Hansi Flick, started brightly, controlling possession and exploiting Madrid’s high defensive line.

In the 20th minute, Pedri broke the deadlock with a spectacular top-corner finish. The midfielder latched onto a precise pass from Lamine Yamal, who tormented Madrid’s defense throughout, to give Barça a deserved lead.

Real Madrid, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, struggled to find rhythm in the first half, with their attack stifled by Barcelona’s offside trap.

A disallowed goal for Jude Bellingham, ruled out for offside, summed up their frustration. However, the second half saw a resurgent Madrid.

Mbappé equalized in the 70th minute, firing a free-kick past Wojciech Szczesny after being fouled by Frenkie de Jong. Seven minutes later, Tchouaméni headed home from Arda Güler’s corner, flipping the game on its head and putting Madrid 2-1 up.

Barcelona refused to buckle. In the dying moments of regular time, Ferran Torres, stepping up in the absence of the injured Robert Lewandowski, pounced on a loose ball to level the score at 2-2, forcing extra time.

The defining moment came in the 116th minute when Koundé intercepted a pass and unleashed a rocket into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the Blaugrana faithful.

The match ended on a sour note for Madrid, with Antonio Rüdiger receiving a red card from the bench for throwing an object toward the referee.

Match Review

Barcelona’s victory was a testament to Flick’s tactical acumen.

His high-pressing game and cohesive midfield trio of Pedri, De Jong, and Olmo overwhelmed Madrid’s makeshift lineup.

Lamine Yamal, at just 17, was a constant threat, earning praise as the youngest scorer in Clásico history earlier this season. Ferran Torres, filling Lewandowski’s boots, proved his worth with a crucial goal, earning the match’s MVP honors.

Real Madrid, however, were left exposed by injuries and a lack of cohesion.

The absence of key players like Eduardo Camavinga, Dani Carvajal, and Éder Militão forced Ancelotti to field a patched-up defense, with youngster Raúl Asencio struggling against Barcelona’s pacey attack.

Rodrygo endured a torrid night, substituted at halftime after a lackluster display, while Vinícius Jr. missed several gilt-edged chances.

Mbappé’s introduction sparked a brief revival, but his impact was limited by Barcelona’s disciplined defending.

Where Real Madrid Fell Short

Madrid’s defeat highlighted several glaring issues. Their injury crisis left them vulnerable, particularly in defense, where Asencio and Vázquez were outpaced by Yamal and Raphinha.

Ancelotti’s decision to bench Mbappé initially raised eyebrows, and while the Frenchman scored, his lack of match fitness was evident.

The midfield, usually a strength, was overrun, with Ceballos unable to match the intensity of Barcelona’s engine room. Off the pitch, Madrid’s pre-match complaints about referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea backfired, creating a distraction that seemed to unsettle the squad.

Coaches and Players React

Hansi Flick was jubilant in his post-match press conference, calling the win “absolutely incredible” and praising his team’s resilience.

Carlo Ancelotti, under increasing pressure with his future uncertain, remained defiant.

However, sources suggest Ancelotti’s tenure may be nearing its end, with Santiago Solari tipped as an interim replacement and Xabi Alonso eyed for next season.

Players

Barcelona’s players were ecstatic, with Pedri dedicating the win to the fans.

Koundé, the unlikely hero, added, “I just saw the ball and hit it. It’s a dream moment.” On the Madrid side, Bellingham expressed frustration, saying, “We gave everything, but it wasn’t enough. We’ll learn from this.”

What’s Next?

Barcelona’s win marks the first step toward a potential treble, with the Catalans leading La Liga and advancing to the Champions League semifinals.

For Real Madrid, the loss compounds a disappointing season, with their Champions League exit and a four-point deficit in La Liga leaving little room for error. The two sides will meet again on May 11 in a crucial league Clásico that could decide the title race.

As the dust settles in Seville, Barcelona’s fans celebrated long into the night, while Madrid’s players left the pitch with heads bowed, knowing they must regroup quickly to salvage their season.
