Cambodia has taken a big step forward in its agricultural exports. Earlier this month, Cambodian officials sent more than 17 tons of fresh durians directly to China for the first time ever. This milestone comes after Chinese authorities approved Cambodian orchards and packing facilities, allowing fresh durians to finally reach one of the world’s largest markets.
Historic Export from Sihanoukville to Shenzhen
Last Friday, Cambodia’s Sihanoukville Autonomous Port shipped the initial consignment of durians to Shenzhen in southern China. The cargo cleared inspections and quality checks at each stage, from farm to packaging facility, meeting both Cambodian and Chinese export standards.

According to Khim Finan, Undersecretary of State and spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, this export highlights what both countries can achieve through careful cooperation between their governments and private sectors
China Approves Cambodian Durian Farms and Factories
Before the shipment could happen, Chinese authorities had to inspect and approve Cambodian farms and factories. In total, China approved 112 durian farms and 30 packing houses in Cambodia. These farms and facilities follow strict rules on hygiene, pest control, and fruit handling.
This approval happened after both countries signed a special agreement called a phytosanitary protocol. This deal was signed during a high-level meeting between leaders of Cambodia and China in April 2024. The protocol allows Cambodia to export not just durians, but also other products like crocodile meat and bird nests.
Cambodian Company Leads First Export
The first shipment was managed by a company called HF Fruit Company Limited, located in Tboung Khmum. They worked with local farmers to collect the fruits, then handled all the packing, safety checks, and transport.
The company plans to keep sending more durians to China. They also said that farmers will be paid based on the size and quality of their fruits. Larger, sweeter, and healthier durians will be priced higher.
This is a good sign for other farmers too, because it encourages them to improve their farming methods and grow better fruits.
Building Sustainable Export Growth
Cambodian officials and private growers see China’s approval as a door to steady growth in fruit exports. HF Fruit Company Limited, based in Tboung Khmum, led the first shipment and plans to continue exporting directly to China. They aim to source durians from local farmers and offer competitive prices based on size and quality.
To ensure long-term success, Cambodia will need to maintain high quality standards and reliable supply logistics. Experts like Khim Bunlene, leader of the King of Durian Farm Community in Kampot, stress the importance of flavor, safety, and reasonable pricing to meet expectations in a demanding market
