Did Brigitte Macron Slap President Macron?

On May 25, 2025, a video surfaced showing Brigitte Macron appearing to slap French President Emmanuel Macron as they disembarked from a plane in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The clip, captured at Noi Bai International Airport, went viral, drawing global attention. The Élysée Palace initially denied the footage, then confirmed its authenticity, calling it “playful teasing.”

A presidential aide described it as a “harmless spat” to downplay the incident. Social media buzz, particularly on X, fueled speculation, with some linking it to “pro-Russian circles.” The event overshadowed Macron’s Asia trip, aimed at securing defense and tech deals.

Context of the Incident

The footage shows Brigitte raising her hand to Macron’s face moments after the plane door opened. Macron appeared surprised but quickly waved to the crowd.

Reports suggest the couple was “squabbling” before the trip began. Brigitte also seemed to reject Macron’s offer to link arms as they descended the plane stairs. The Élysée framed it as a private moment of “letting off steam.” French outlet BFM RMC noted Brigitte’s clothing matched the figure in the video. The incident occurred during Macron’s first Vietnam visit in nearly a decade.

Intentional or Playful?

The Élysée’s shift from denial to calling it “playful banter” raised questions. A source close to Macron insisted it was not malicious, describing it as a “little fun” before official duties.

Critics on social media questioned the initial denial, asking why a joke needed refutation. Some speculated it was a spontaneous reaction to a private disagreement. No evidence suggests deliberate hostility, but the public setting amplified scrutiny. The lack of further comment from the Macrons leaves the intent ambiguous.

Their Relationship History

Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron’s relationship began controversially in 1992. Emmanuel, then 15, met Brigitte, his 39-year-old married drama teacher, in Amiens. Their 24-year age gap and her role as his teacher drew scrutiny. Brigitte divorced her first husband in 2006 and married Emmanuel in 2007. Despite public fascination, they’ve maintained a united front. Brigitte, now 71, has been a key advisor to Emmanuel, 46, throughout his presidency. Their bond has faced persistent rumors, including false transgender claims about Brigitte.

Ongoing Public Scrutiny

The Macrons’ relationship has long attracted media attention. False rumors, notably a 2021 YouTube video claiming Brigitte was transgender, led to legal action.

In 2024, a Paris court fined two women €8,000 for libel over these claims. Far-right groups and conspiracy theorists, including U.S. commentator Candace Owens, have fueled disinformation. Brigitte filed another complaint in August 2024 for online harassment.

The recent slap incident, while minor, underscores the intense scrutiny the Macrons face. Their unconventional relationship, combined with political pressures, keeps them in the spotlight. Macron’s Asia trip, including a planned UK state visit in July 2025, proceeds amid this distraction. The Élysée’s handling of the narrative reflects their effort to control the story, but public fascination persists.
