He warned that Canada must “never forget the lessons” of the “American betrayal.”

The statement reflects growing tensions with the United States, driven by U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policies and provocative rhetoric.

Carney’s words, spoken at the Liberal Party headquarters in Ottawa, underscored a shift in Canada’s relationship with its southern neighbor.

A Sudden Leadership Change

Trudeau’s exit followed months of low poll numbers and criticism over economic issues like inflation and housing.

Carney, with no prior elected office experience, stepped in as a political novice.

His background as governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England positioned him as a steady hand to navigate economic crises. He called a snap election to secure a mandate, capitalizing on rising anti-American sentiment.

What Happened: Trump’s Threats Fuel Tensions

The Canadian election was overshadowed by Trump’s actions. He imposed steep tariffs on Canadian exports, including 25% on steel and aluminum and 10% on energy products.

Trump also repeatedly suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, calling Trudeau a “governor” and threatening annexation.

These moves sparked outrage in Canada, with many canceling U.S. vacations and boycotting American goods. Carney framed the election as a stand against Trump, warning that the U.S. wanted Canada’s land, water, and resources. His message resonated, helping the Liberals erase a 20-point polling deficit to defeat Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Where and Why It Was Said

Carney made his “American betrayal” remarks during his election night speech in Ottawa on April 29, 2025. He spoke to a crowd of supporters, emphasizing that Canada’s old trade-dependent relationship with the U.S. was over. The speech aimed to rally Canadians against Trump’s economic and territorial threats.

Carney pledged to strengthen ties with Europe and the UK while investing in housing and limiting immigration to ease domestic pressures. His words signaled a new, defiant path for Canada, rooted in self-reliance and unity.
