Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called on the European Union to impose sanctions on Ukraine following the reported death of a Hungarian conscript serving in the Ukrainian armed forces. Orbán made the demand during a recent press conference, accusing Ukraine of mistreating ethnic Hungarians in its military ranks and failing to respect their rights.
The Hungarian government says the conscript, reportedly a man from the Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s Zakarpattia region, died under unclear circumstances while serving on the front lines.
Conflicts Rise Between Hungary and Ukraine Over Minority Rights
For years, Hungary and Ukraine have experienced tense relations over the treatment of ethnic Hungarians living in western Ukraine, particularly in the Zakarpattia (Transcarpathian) region. Hungary has often accused Ukraine of restricting the language, education, and cultural rights of ethnic minorities.
The recent death has brought this issue back to the forefront. Orbán claims that Ukrainian authorities are forcing ethnic Hungarians to serve in the military, even against their will. The death of the Hungarian conscript may also raise concerns for other countries in the region with minority populations in Ukraine.
