Russia has officially started direct passenger flights to North Korea after many years. This marks the first time since the 1990s that a Russian airline is flying directly from Moscow to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea. The first flight took off on July 27, 2025, from Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow and landed in Pyongyang after an eight-hour journey.
Russia’s Nordwind Airlines Starts Monthly Moscow to Pyongyang Flights
The Russian airline Nordwind has been allowed to operate this route by the Russian aviation authority. At the moment, only one flight per month is scheduled between Moscow and Pyongyang. However, if demand increases, this could soon change to two or more flights per week. For now, officials are starting slowly to see how successful the route becomes.

This new flight route makes it easier for people in Russia to travel to North Korea and could also help with government, business, and tourism travel in the future.
New Option for Travelers and a Convenience for Tourism
Before this new route, the only way for Russian citizens to enter North Korea was by train or using North Korea’s own airline for a flight from Vladivostok. The cost of a ticket on the new Moscow-to-Pyongyang flight was about 44,700 rubles, or roughly $560 USD. That price didn’t stop travelers, and the first flight sold out quickly.

This service is also expected to boost tourism. Some travel companies in Russia have already shown interest in offering tour packages to North Korea. North Korea recently developed a coastal resort in Wonsan, which it hopes will attract Russian tourists in the coming months.
Stronger Ties Between Russia and North Korea
This new flight service is more than just about travel. It also reflects the growing relationship between Russia and North Korea in many areas. The two countries recently signed a major agreement for mutual defense and deeper cooperation. Since Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, North Korea has openly supported Russia, both politically and possibly with military help.
Leaders from both countries have praised each other and promised to work closely. These direct flights now make it easier for officials, military personnel, and business representatives to meet and discuss new plans.
The launch of direct flights between Russia and North Korea is more than just a convenience for travelers it’s a clear signal of a new phase in the relationship between the two nations. From increased diplomatic and military cooperation to tourism and trade opportunities, the Moscow Pyongyang route opens the door for many new developments.
