World Health Organization (WHO) has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with Ethiopia to improve the country’s healthcare system. This announcement came following a high-level meeting between WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and senior Ethiopian officials, including Health Minister Dr. Lia Tadesse.
Longstanding Relationship Based on Trust and Results
Ethiopia and WHO have enjoyed a strong partnership for many years. The WHO has been providing technical and financial support to help Ethiopia improve its healthcare system, expand access to vaccines, and train medical workers across the country. WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros, who is himself Ethiopian, noted that the organization’s support has always been driven by the needs and priorities of the Ethiopian people.

WHO has assisted in setting up disease surveillance systems, responding to outbreaks like measles and cholera, and delivering essential medical supplies in times of crisis. The collaboration also includes working on maternal and child health, reducing malnutrition, and strengthening mental health services.
Supporting Ethiopia in Times of Crisis and Recover
One of the strongest elements of WHO’s support has been its presence during national emergencies. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, WHO provided Ethiopia with test kits, personal protective equipment and critical knowledge to handle the outbreak. The organization also helped improve vaccination rates by offering logistical and financial help to reach even rural areas.
In recent years, Ethiopia has faced multiple challenges, including internal conflict and displacement of people. The WHO has remained a vital partner in delivering health services to those affected. Mobile clinics, emergency supplies, and disease prevention campaigns were all part of the WHO’s efforts to keep people safe during difficult times.
The organization has also contributed to rebuilding damaged health facilities and improving water and sanitation in conflict-affected areas. Dr. Tedros assured that WHO will continue to stand with Ethiopia during both emergency response and recovery efforts.
Improving Health Facilities for All Ethiopians
The continued cooperation between WHO and Ethiopia sends a powerful message: that health is a human right and should be protected regardless of social or economic status. Both parties committed to making healthcare more inclusive and affordable, especially for women, children, and people in rural or underserved regions.
The WHO reaffirmed that Ethiopia is a priority country for the organization and that its health transformation agenda will receive the support it needs. With joint planning, better resource use, and consistent community engagement, both WHO and Ethiopia aim to achieve long-lasting improvements in the health sector.
