Graphite is also found in many other technologies, including phones, laptops, solar panels, and advanced defense systems. Demand for graphite is growing quickly worldwide.

China dominates the graphite market. It controls about 75% of graphite processing, which means that even if other countries mine graphite, much of it is still processed in China. This situation creates risks. If there are trade tensions, political problems, or supply chain disruptions, countries relying on China could face shortages or higher prices for graphite.

Trump’s Strategy to Reduce Dependence on China

To address these risks, the Trump administration took several important steps. In 2025, the U.S. Commerce Department imposed a large tariff on graphite imports from China. This tariff increased the price of Chinese graphite by nearly 160%. This makes Chinese graphite less competitive and encourages buyers to look for other suppliers.

At the same time, the U.S. government has been working to increase domestic graphite production. It has sped up the approval process for new mining projects and provided support to American companies involved in mining and processing critical minerals. The administration has also sought partnerships with other mineral-rich countries like Ukraine and Greenland to diversify supply sources.

Challenges in Replacing China’s Graphite Supply

Although the plan is clear, experts warn that replacing China’s dominance in graphite will not be easy. Mining and processing graphite to the high standards required for battery use is complex and expensive. Building new mines and refining facilities takes many years and requires huge investments.

Environmental concerns also play a role. Faster mining to meet demand might harm natural ecosystems, and environmental groups may resist some mining projects.

Some industry experts also question whether U.S. companies have the capacity or technology to process battery-grade graphite at scale. Many believe it will take time for America to catch up with China’s advanced processing industry.
