Why Trump’s Megabill Is Dividing House Republicans ?

Recent Developments

House Republicans are scrambling to secure votes for President Donald Trump’s megabill. The bill passed the Senate on July 1, 2025, with a 50-50 tie broken by Vice President JD Vance.

A key procedural vote in the House stalled on July 2, 2025, as GOP leaders struggled to unify their party. Speaker Mike Johnson remains optimistic but faces opposition from both conservative and moderate Republicans. The House aims to meet Trump’s July 4 deadline for passage

What is Megabill ?

The megabill, dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill” by Trump, is a sweeping tax and spending package. It includes $4 trillion in tax cuts, increased border security funding, and no taxes on tips or overtime.

The bill also proposes significant Medicaid cuts, which could impact 12 million Americans’ health coverage. It passed the House in May but faced Senate changes, requiring another House vote. GOP leaders face challenges due to a slim Republican majority.

 Will It Get Enough Votes?

The bill’s fate in the House is uncertain. More than a dozen Republicans oppose it, with Speaker Johnson able to lose only three votes in a party-line vote. Hard-line conservatives, like Rep. Chip Roy, argue the bill doesn’t cut spending enough and adds to the deficit.

Moderates, like Rep. David Valadao, worry about Medicaid cuts affecting their districts. A procedural vote on July 2 was delayed due to absences and opposition. Johnson met with holdouts at the White House, and Rep. Ralph Norman recently switched to support the bill. The House Rules Committee advanced the bill 7-6, but a final vote remains at risk

What Trump Said

Trump has pushed hard for the bill’s passage. He called it a “great bill” with “something for everyone” at a Florida event on July 1. He disputed Congressional Budget Office claims that 11.8 million could lose insurance, calling it “waste, fraud, and abuse.” Trump pressured GOP holdouts, even threatening to primary Rep. Thomas Massie for opposing the bill in May. He expressed confidence to ABC News, expecting the bill to pass “very nicely

Public Reaction

Public opinion on the megabill is largely negative. Polls show broad disapproval, though some provisions, like tax cuts, have support.

Social media reflects division, with some praising tax relief and border security, while others criticize Medicaid cuts. A heckler was arrested for disrupting Senate debates, shouting, “You people are awful.” The bill’s impact on working-class and rural communities has sparked concern, especially in Trump’s voter base analysis-

What Experts Say

Experts highlight the bill’s risks and benefits. Adam Isacson, a border expert, noted June’s low border crossings, crediting intensified immigration enforcement.

The Congressional Budget Office warns of 12 million losing health coverage due to Medicaid cuts. Senate Republicans claim the bill’s economic growth projections are underestimated, disputing cost concerns. Critics argue the bill lacks a cohesive plan to solidify Trump’s new Republican coalition.
